What to wear to a job interview

The usual advice is to dress one step above what people wear on the job. For a bank, a law firm or a client-facing sales role, that means a suit. For an office in business casual, a blazer with chinos or tailored trousers is enough. For a startup where everyone wears jeans, a crisp shirt and chinos still show you took the meeting seriously.

To find the step, look at the company's careers page, its team photos or posts from the office, or ask the recruiter what people wear. When nothing tells you, lean formal: an interviewer rarely holds a well-cut blazer against you.

Whatever the dress code, fit and care matter more than price. Clothes should be clean, pressed and comfortable to sit in, in calm colors like navy, grey, black and white, with quiet shoes and few accessories.

Job interview outfits to try on

From a full suit for a formal office to business casual for a relaxed one. See each on your own photo.

Navy suit and tie

Navy suit and tie

A navy suit with a light blue shirt is the safe choice for a formal interview at a bank, a law firm or in sales. Navy reads confident without the severity of black; leave the pocket square at home for a conservative office.

Blazer and chinos

Blazer and chinos

One step above business casual: a navy blazer, a white oxford shirt and tan chinos. Right for most offices that do not wear suits, and for a tech or creative interview where a suit would look stiff.

Skirt suit

Skirt suit

A charcoal skirt suit over an ivory shell top is the classic formal interview outfit. The knee-length pencil skirt and closed-toe pumps suit the most conservative office.

Navy pantsuit

Navy pantsuit

A tailored navy pantsuit with a white blouse is as formal as a skirt suit and easier to wear all day. Pointed flats keep it sharp and comfortable.

Blouse and tailored trousers

Blouse and tailored trousers

For a business casual office: a cream blouse tucked into tailored camel trousers, with a slim belt and loafers. Polished without a jacket; add a blazer if you are unsure.

Take a full-body photo

Stand back so your whole body is in the frame, head to toe, facing the camera. A mirror selfie or a photo someone takes of you both work. Fitted clothes and even light work best.

FAQ

Do I need to wear a suit to a job interview?

Only where the job itself is formal, as in law, finance, consulting or many client-facing roles. Most other offices expect business casual, and a blazer with chinos or tailored trousers is the safe step above it.

What colors are best for a job interview?

Navy, grey, black and white read calm and professional and are easy to combine. A single accent in a tie, a blouse or a scarf is fine; save bright, busy patterns for after the offer.

What should I wear to a video interview?

The same as in person, at least from the waist up: a solid-colored shirt or blouse, a blazer if the role is formal, and nothing with small checks or thin stripes, which can shimmer on camera.
