Dark suit and tie
The most traditional funeral outfit for men: a dark charcoal suit, a white shirt and a plain black tie. Polished black shoes and a black belt keep it as quiet as it should be.
Try it on →A funeral asks for clothes that do not draw attention: dark, plain and modest. Black is the safe choice, but navy, charcoal and dark grey are just as respectful at most Western services. Keep shoulders covered, hemlines at or below the knee and accessories small; the point is to stand with the other mourners, not out from them.
Check two things before you dress. First, the family's wishes: an announcement that asks for a celebration of life or for a favorite color overrides the dark dress code. Second, the tradition: at Hindu funerals and in some East Asian traditions white is the color of mourning, and some faiths ask for covered heads or arms. When in doubt, ask someone close to the family.
Think about the day too. A graveside burial means standing on grass, so block heels or flats are kinder than stilettos, and a dark coat or cardigan helps in a cold church or a windy cemetery.

A knee-length black dress with sleeves and a modest neckline is the classic choice. Sheer black tights and closed-toe low heels keep it formal without drawing attention.

Just as appropriate as a dress, and practical for a graveside service on uneven ground. Wear the blazer over a plain dark top, with flat leather loafers you can stand in.

For a smaller or less formal service: a black blazer and dark trousers with a white shirt buttoned to the collar. It reads respectful without a full suit.

A dark pleated midi skirt with a fine cardigan over a black blouse is modest and warm, a good choice for a cold church. Opaque tights and flats stay comfortable through a long day.

Stand back so your whole body is in the frame, head to toe, facing the camera. A mirror selfie or a photo someone takes of you both work. Fitted clothes and even light work best.

Yes. Navy, charcoal and dark grey are accepted at most Western funerals and look as respectful as black. Keep the rest of the outfit plain, without loud patterns or bright accents.
Generally not to the service: jeans read as casual. If the family asks for casual dress, follow their lead; otherwise dark trousers or a dark skirt are the safer choice.
Dark trousers, a white or light blue collared shirt and a dark blazer or a plain dark sweater. A tie is optional with a blazer; dark leather shoes finish the outfit.
